A Mother’s Day Reflection from Le Sac
I have always loved gardens and flowers. When I think of my childhood, a garden is most often involved—picking flowers, searching for fairies, making potions, and playing with friends. Gardens were the backdrop to my growing up, and somehow, I cannot imagine a life without one—without growing something, however small. My daughter, now four, also loves to wander outside; she picks flowers and plays just as I did. It’s no surprise, then, that this love of gardens is a thread that runs joyfully through the women in our family, passed on like a treasured recipe or a well-worn book.
My own love of gardening traces back to my mother Carol, and the women who shaped her. Her childhood was steeped in the scents and seasons of family gardens in Victoria—her fondest memories held within an enchanted two-acre haven in Brighton, where her grandmother Helena tended a cottage garden and fruit trees with quiet devotion. Her mother, too, had a flair for the unusual, planting curiosities that delighted the eye and intrigued the senses. Afternoons were spent beneath trees with egg sandwiches and jam biscuits, or wading in a canvas pool while the fragrance of rosemary and lavender drifted on the breeze. Mud pies, daisy chains, sun-warmed fruit, and homemade cordial formed the roots of a lifelong passion.
One of my mother’s most treasured memories is of a school holiday spent with her beloved Great Aunt Bea, newly widowed . That summer, she kept her company in the garden—climbing trees for apricots, plums, and quinces, which Aunt Bea would poach and serve with cream for dessert.
Years later, after moving to Queensland with me as a child, my mother embraced the tropical landscape with the same sense of wonder. Jackfruit, guavas, passionfruit, gingers, mangoes— growing as much as she could and embracing the warmer climate. Her curiosity, shaped by the gardens of her childhood, endured. It grew. And it was passed down to me, as I now pass it to my own children.
Now, we’d love to hear your story. Who inspired your love of the garden?
