April in the Garden - Trisha's Meanderings

As April unfolds, there’s a soft, reflective energy in the air. For Trisha, this month brings a quiet yet profound opportunity to honour the legacy of the women who shaped her love for the garden.

Trisha's earliest memories are intertwined with her mother’s love for plants. From the very first photo of her mother as a young girl in the garden, to the creation of a gentle, meandering country garden where her family spent countless hours, it’s clear that gardening was more than just a hobby. It was a way of life, a connection to nature that grounded and nurtured them all.

"Memories of my darling Mum are so tied up with her absolute love of creating beauty in the garden. Fragrance was so important in the plants she chose and all the love I have for gardens and plants come from her."

Trisha’s mother showed her that the love of gardening transcends time, place, and circumstance.

"After her marriage to my Dad Mum created the most beautiful gentle meandering country garden where she would spend as much time as she could in a busy life of four children and a husband who loved adventuring, where she would be just as happy paddling in a canoe on the crocodile infested Daly river in the Northern Territory or walking down the nearby Bungonia Gorge.

Until the very end of her life, gardening remained such a passion for her, and I am so fortunate to have been so lovingly nurtured by such an exceptional, selfless, loving, wonderful mother who taught me, by example, so much about the joy of plants and gardens."

For Trisha, these memories are a garden of their own—one filled with beauty, wisdom, and love that continues to grow, just like the plants her mother tended to so carefully. This reflection is not just about remembering; it’s about honoring those who helped cultivate this deep connection to the earth.

As we look ahead to Mother’s Day, we’re reminded of the incredible influence the matriarchs in our families have had on our love for gardening and the natural world. Like many of you, Trisha and Sahra are deeply inspired by the women who nurtured their passion for plants and passed down their wisdom through the generations. Their influence has been a thread woven through every garden they've created, and every seed they’ve planted.

We want to hear your story!
