Seasons On The Farm - February
January is a golden month—long, slow sunny days infused with the scent of sun-warmed earth and the rhythmic hum of bugs. It’s a time when the garden is at its most abundant, spilling over, overflowing… and overwhelming with summer’s generosity. Tomatoes, plump and sun-ripened, hang heavy on the vine, cucumbers and zucchinis growing faster than we can eat. The first sowings of autumn promise a new season to come, pumpkin vines growing rampant in the garden…

I adore time in the garden, not just for its produce but for the feeling it evokes—a heady mix of warmth, ease, and celebration. The school holidays mean long afternoons and later nights with family and friends, laughter spilling across the lawn, meals shared under the dappled shade of trees. There’s something deeply satisfying about a table laden with homegrown tomatoes, basil torn fresh from the garden, and crusty bread still warm from the oven—simple, joyful food, best enjoyed in good company.

And then, the rain. Glorious, soul-quenching rain. The kind that arrives in heavy, sweeping bursts, soaking deep into the earth and filling the air with the scent of petrichor. The rain we have been longing for, and that I wish for so many who like us depend on the rain and are desperate for it right now… The garden drinks it in, sighing with relief, and so do I. There's no greater pleasure than standing in the midst of it, watching the thirsty ground come back to life.

Summer lingers at the edges, but already there’s a whisper of change—a coolness in the morning air, a golden hue creeping into the late afternoon light. The garden shifts, ever so slightly, preparing for the turn towards autumn. But for now, I savour these final sun-drenched days, storing them away like bottled preserves, to be opened and remembered when the cooler months settle in.
